Part 2 of a story arc that changed me, and made me believe in comics in a new way. This book had been referenced in so many X-men books of the late eighties and nineties ("Editor's note: see X-men 142"), and when I got it in my hands as a very eager 11-year-old collector, I thought it was the holy grail.

The beauty of the future history, the continuity of the then current-day team to the dystopian future team of freedom fighters- it really blew my mind. It was Chris Claremont at his best, and John Byrne draws Canadian super heroes better than any American ever could- his Wolverine is my Wolverine. And Sentinels are forever scary for me. And I was also forever hooked on X-men...

Story Featuring X-Men

"This is a tale of two worlds--and of the child/woman who sought to save them."

Storyline

The Brotherhood makes its play against Senator Kelly. Kitty's future self, which is in possession of her present body, helps the X-Men defeat Mystique and her crew (thus changing the future). As soon as Kelly is saved, Kitty's psyche returns from the future to her own body. A month later, in response to the attack, Kelly puts Gyrich in charge of a top secret Sentinel program called "Project Wideawake."
