Appearances of Rex Mason

Created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon. Metamorpho (Rex Mason) first appeared in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #57 (December 1964-January 1965). Rex married Sapphire Stagg in Batman and the Outsiders Annual (DC, 1984 series) #2 ([September] 1985). He died in The Outsiders (DC, 1985 series) #27 (January 1988), but was resurrected in Invasion (DC, 1988 series) #3 (1988 [January 1989]). It was revealed in Justice League Europe (DC, 1989 series) #5 (August 1989) that Sapphire married Java after Rex was believed to have died and that she gave birth to Rex's baby during his absence. They had a son named Joey Mason, who was first shown in Justice League Europe (DC, 1989 series) #11 (February 1990). Metamorpho was rendered inert in JLA (DC, 1997 series) #1 (January 1997). He was briefly resurrected in JLA (DC, 1997 series) #52 (May 2001), and was finally revived in JLA / JSA Secret Files & Origins (DC, 2003 series) #1 (January 2003). Rex and Sapphire apparently remarried sometime between JLA / JSA Secret Files & Origins #1 and Birds of Prey (DC, 1999 series) #50 (February 2003). It was revealed in Outsiders (DC, 2003 series) #7 (February 2004) that small fragments had broken off of Metamorpho's body during the events of JLA (DC, 1997 series) #1, and that one of the fragments formed a new Metamorpho who later renamed himself [Shift][14162]. Shift was merged back into the original Metamorpho in Outsiders Annual (DC, 2007 series) #1 (June 2007). Metamorpho learned in The Outsiders (DC, 2009 series) #32 (October 2010) that Sapphire had died several months prior to that issue. The New 52 Metamorpho first appeared, in a hologram, in Justice League International (DC, 2011 series) #1 (November 2011).
