Appearances of Sarge

Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru. Sarge first appeared in the Gunner & Sarge feature in All-American Men of War (DC, 1952 series) #67 (March 1959). There has been conflicting information on what Sarge's surname is. According to (?)* and Bug! The Adventures of Forager (DC, 2017 series) #2 (August 2017), it is "Clay". However, according to DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004) and Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), it is "Petersen". There has also been conflicting information on Sarge's fate. According to Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC, 1985 series) #3 (June 1985), in Pre-Crisis continuity he was killed by the Anti-Monitor's Shadow Demons in late Spring 1945 (narration refers to the end of the war in Europe, but incorrectly says 1944). The circumstances of his death in the Post-Crisis continuity were shown in The Losers Special (DC, 1985 series) #1 ([September] 1985). He was shown to be alive in 1976 in DCU: Legacies (DC, 2010 series) #4 (October 2010). According to Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), he died on Dinosaur Island in 1945 (this was a sequel to the non-canon story in DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004)). *(Found on a 2001 post on the old DC Comics Message Boards. Still trying to locate the original source.)
