Lt. John Cloud, the Navajo Ace, first appeared in All-American Men of War (DC, 1952 series) #82 (November-December 1960).
Johnny's Navajo name was stated at least five different ways: Flying Cloud in issue #82 (November-December 1960), Johnny Flying Cloud in #85 (May-June 1961), White Cloud in #90 (March-April 1962), Flying White Cloud in #93 (September-October 1962), and Johnny White Cloud in #95 (January-February 1963).
In his earliest adventures, Johnny Cloud held the rank of Lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #52 (February-March 1964). He was first referred to as a Captain in his own feature one month earlier in All-American Men of War (DC, 1952 series) #101 (January-February 1964). Johnny inexplicably became a Lieutenant once again in Our Fighting Forces (DC, 1954 series) #163 (January 1976), and was not referred to as a Captain again until The Losers Special (DC, 1985 series) #1 ([September] 1985).
There has been conflicting information on Johnny Cloud's fate. According to Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC, 1985 series) #3 (June 1985), in Pre-Crisis continuity he was killed by the Anti-Monitor's Shadow Demons in late Spring 1945 (narration refers to the end of the war in Europe, but incorrectly says 1944). The circumstances of his death in the Post-Crisis continuity were shown in The Losers Special (DC, 1985 series) #1 ([September] 1985). He was shown to be alive in 1976 in DCU: Legacies (DC, 2010 series) #4 (October 2010). According to Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), he died on Dinosaur Island in 1945 (this was a sequel to the non-canon story in DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004)).
