First appearance of Shayera Thal as Hawkgirl in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #34 (February-March 1961). Shayera changed her code name to "Hawkwoman" in World's Finest Comics (DC, 1941 series) #272 (October 1981).
Hawkwoman's backstory was revamped beginning in Hawkworld (DC, 1989 series) #1 ([August] 1989).
Hawkgirl introduces herself as "Policewoman Shayera Thal" in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #42 (June-July 1962), "Menace of the Dragonfly Raiders", page 15. In the first few issues, Shayera's secret identity is spelled both "Shiera" and "Shierra", but settles on Shiera. Her name persisted as "Thal" through the Silver Age. In Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe (DC, 1985 series) #10 (December 1985), the "Hawkwoman" entry begins "Alter Ego: Shayera Thal, alias Shiera Hall / Occupation: Former Thanagarian Policewoman, former Secretary, now Co-Director of Midway City Museum / Marital Status: Married / Known Relatives: Katar Hol, alias Carter Hall (husband)". Clearly she's "Thal" from her first appearance right up to Crisis, which ended the Silver Age. Post-Crisis appearances named her "Shayera Hol" as the character was perpetually reinvented and muddled.
