Superman and the "Black Gold" Swindle

"C'mon Sarge!"

Storyline

An unscrupulous firm sells what they think to be worthless stock in "Black Gold Oil", then try to buy it all back when they hear that oil has been discovered on the property...thanks to Superman.

Story Notes

Superman uses X-ray vision. First reference as the Man of Steel. Penciller identification by Bob Hughes. Cassidy claimed that both he and Wayne Boring were given free rein to interpret the scripts in their own fashion, with no editorial interference.

Shanghaied

"On a visit to a neighboring city..."

Storyline

Pep and two others are shanghaied and placed on a freighter heading for the south seas. After some time, Pep gets himself locked in the brig. He pulls planks from the wall which connects with the hold. There, in crates labeled "peaches", he discovers they are filled with rifles. He jumps overboard and tells the local authorities, who arrest the captain as the crates are being unloaded.

The Sea Ghost

"On board the S.S. Kansas City bound for San Francisco from..."

Storyline

Traveling on a liner headed for San Francisco, Zatara assists two government agents who are carrying plans for the Panama Canal. A fellow magician conjures a "sea ghost" against which Zatara can do nothing, until he realizes that it was summoned from the mind of Madame Kelly, who is working for a foreign government. Having narrowly prevented her from stabbing one of the agents, he turns her into a statue until they reach port.
