Storyline: Mary Ann falls for Tom, her new co-worker, even though she soon learns that he is already engaged.
Storyline: Steve finds himself trying to protect Sophia, his brother's widow, from the scorn of his mother and his brother's former girlfriend. In the process, he falls in love with Sophia himself.
Storyline: Paul meets a despondent Elaine and tries to cheer her up, falling in love with her in the process. He later learns that she recently broke her engagement and realizes that she is only on the rebound and doesn't love him in return.
Storyline: Jane falls in love with Jimmy, one of her uncle's employees, but Jimmy thinks that the class differences between them will tear them apart.
