Blaine Colt refuses to wear a gun because he's such a good shot that he's afraid he might kill someone in a moment of rage. When his father is murdered, he kills the murderer in a duel and becomes a fugitive from the law.
Story Notes
This story was first told in issue #11 (October 1950); several details are changed. The setting is changed to Abiline, Wyoming, from "Purgatory", and the name of Dan Colt's ranch is changed. Rather than being killed by two corrupt lawmen, Colt's father is killed by a local tough, though he is named "Lash Larribee" in both versions.
This version of Kid Colt's origin is retold in Gunsmoke Western (Marvel, 1955 series) #72 (September 1962).
